Government steps in to raise funds for Mighty Warriors
Government yesterday stepped in to ensure there is funding for the Mighty Warriors ahead of the Africa Women Cup of Nations next month by setting up a fundraising steering committee comprising executives from the corporate sector. The Mighty Warriors are still to get into camp due to limited resources and with time running out, the government led by Minister of Sport Makhosini Hlongwane, has moved in to facilitate preparations for the team.
Yesterday, Hlongwane had a brief meeting with some executives of companies discussing ways on how to mobilise resources for the national team. He also revealed at the same platform that the team requires $300 000 to cover all expenses from camping, preparations costs, air fares as well as allowances for the team.
At the meeting Hlongwane said,
There has been a sedentary approach in terms of resource mobilisation for women football. As a country there is need to support this successful team. The team is preparing for the Africa Women Cup of Nations and they require $300 000 to fulfil the Cameroon trip next month. With resources available the team is supposed to be in camp and playing some friendly matches. We wanted a scenario where they go and camp in Ghana a week before the tournament begins but all that can only happen when there is money.
