President Mugabe pays tribute to Fidel Castro
President Robert Mugabe yesterday paid tribute to the late former President of Cuba, Fidel Castro and described his death as a loss not only for the Caribbean island but for African leaders.
Mugabe chronicled how Castro assisted and trained over 3000 young teachers of science and mathematics who according to the President, have done a lot of good work in Zimbabwe. He also narrated how despite being on sanctions from the United States and its allies, Castro managed to start a programme to train doctors which are still in Zimbabwe’s hospitals.
The President also credited Castro for being the visionary behind the ongoing STEM initiative which he pioneered by the science and mathematics education programme. He also said that the Look East policy was pioneered by Castro after a fallout with western countries.
