Econet Wireless subsidiary, Steward Health collapsed and merged six individual health plans into a single plan citing high costs. This meant that some people who were subscribing to the lowest plan will now have to fork out $177, compared to the $8 they were paying. The highest previous package was $98, while the lowest was $8. Those who want to continue will have to pay $177 per month.
Steward Health managing director Hazel Banza in a circular said:
The cost of maintaining cover has increased astronomically over the year rendering the current contribution rates inadequate to meet the claims. We have thus been left with no choice but to increase subscription rates so as to allow sustainable medical cover.
