Councils claim they cannot fix roads because Zimra is garnishing road repair funds, plead for immunity
Local authorities have complained that they are unable to fix roads due to lack of funds which are being garnished by Zimra. The authorities contend that Zimra keeps raiding their accounts taking funds ear marked for road rehabilitation. The local authorities are pleading for immunity from Zimra garnishee orders. Local authorities have been facing a lot of heat for their failure to maintain roads.
Mutasa Rural District Council (RDC) chief executive officer Edward Pise spoke to the Source and said:
We understand that the country is facing economic challenges and in need of revenue but our problem is that as councils, Zimra is garnishing our accounts. They are garnishing our accounts as soon as Zinara disburses funds for roads. This has become a huge challenge,
FeedbackIf this continues unresolved, we would be unable to attend to the roads that the funds are meant for. So we are pleading with the Minister (of Transport) to engage his counterparts in government so that Zinara funds are immune to garnishee orders.
