Speaking to delegates at a Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA) and Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) meetingin the capital yesterday, Civil Protection Unit (CPU)’s deputy director Sibusisiwe Ndlovu said that tenants renting homes that were affected by floods in Harare will not be compensated under a government assistance scheme.
She said that lodgers should look for their own accomodation if they were involved in floods stating that the CPU can only supply money for assistance and food items. Ndlovu also said that the CPU will not provide funding for commercial and business loses. However CHRA chairperson objected saying that the idea of compensating only the landlord was unfair as some rent out a place with no landlord.
