Tourism minister Walter Mzembi has officially filed his nomination papers for the position of secretary-general of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).
Mzembi had been endorsed by the African Union despite a late bid by the Seychelles’s Alain St Ange. In a statement yesterday, Mzembi said the key elements of his plan include administrative and governance reform of the organisation, responsible tourism and sustainability, and resource mobilisation.
The election will take place at the UNWTO Executive Council meeting scheduled for Madrid, Spain, from May 11 to 12 this year.
