South Africa introduces biometric capturing system at Beitbridge border post

South Africa has introduced a biometric capturing system for travellers entering or leaving that country via Beitbridge Border Post. The system known as enhanced Movement Control System (eMCS) was introduced at Lanseria International Airport in November 2015 before it was rolled out to other ports.

eMCS captures a travellers finger prints and facial recognition and started running at Beitbridge point of entry on March 10 this year. When The Herald visited Betbridge only holders of South African passports were exempted from undergoing the screening. An immigration officer who spoke to the publication on condition of anonymity said that the system is supposed to capture data in less than two minutes but they were having challenges as they were still getting accustomed to it hence they were picking travellers at random for registration.
