The Parliament portfolio committee on Public Service Labour and Social Welfare has called for the fresh vetting of war veterans and their children benefiting from government through the ministry of Welfare Services for War Veterans, after discovering the existence of thousands of fake war veterans milking the treasury.
Part of the report reads:
An audit should be conducted to establish the number of genuine War Veterans and their dependents to avert and eradicate leakages to non bona-fide beneficiaries. A massive exercise to vet War Collaborators still needs to be carried out and this has not been provided for in the budget. This is a new government ministry and is still under-resourced in terms of human resources. Most of the staff in this ministry been seconded from the Armed Forces and this is creating issues of accountability and inefficiency in the ministry.
The ministry is looking after the interests of 34,000 War veterans and their dependents, 9,000 War Victims (Disabled), 5,400 Ex Political Prisoners, Detainees and Restrictees.
