23 people die in 217 accidents over Easter period, 27 544 arrested
The police have confirmed that 23 people died in 217 accidents across the Easter holiday. At least 109 people were injured in the accidents. The number of fatalities is worse compared to last year when 16 people were killed across the Easter period. However, the actual number of accidents decreased this year to 217 from 232 last year. The police also impounded ย 199 vehicles this year and arrested 27 544 people compared to 410 impounded vehicles and 27 630 arrests last year.
ZRP spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said:
The major causes of accidents were speeding, inattention, misjudgement, overtaking errors and failure to give way. While the total number of accidents recorded was reduced by six percent as compared to 2016, it is disheartening to note that motorists are not heeding our calls to exercise caution on the roads and this is contributing to the death toll which is being recorded,
