University bars students from lectures as govt fails to remit $400 000 Unicef scholarship money
Great Zimbabwe University has barred more than 400 students from attending lectures due to outstanding fees. The students who are specializing in indigenous languages are on scholarship with their fees being paid for by the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef). The students allege that Unicef has already paid the money to the government, but the government is not remitting the money to the university. As a result, the students collectively owe more than $400 000.
One of the students who spoke to Newsday said:
Unicef has paid [but] Treasury has not remitted the funds. It owes GZU more than $400 000. They tried to pay $40 000, but GZU denied the offer and this led to the present situation,
FeedbackStudent representatives went to Harare to see the permanent secretary and directors and they were to bring receipts reflecting the breakdown of our $671 fees per semester. But they failed to access these because the registrar, vice-registrar and vice-chancellor were out of their offices.
