South Africa’s City Press reports that Zimbabwean born South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Sawatu) general secretary Zenzo Mahlangu was arrested and deported on Thursday.
Home Affairs acting spokesperson David Hlabane confirmed that Mahlangu had been arrested and deported on Thursday for having fake South African documents. Said Hlabane:
He was deported on the same day, May 4; he chose not to exercise his right to challenge the deportation, but opted to purchase his own flight ticket and depart immediately instead of being deported through Lindela. Home Affairs received information that Mr Mahlangu was in possession of a South African identity document that identified him as a South African citizen by birth, while he actually a Zimbabwean national. The matter was investigated and it was found that the South African identity document through misrepresentation.
However, Sawatu spokesperson Zanele Sabela remained adamant and said that Mahlangu was still in South Africa.
