Botha and his clients accidentally walked into the middle of a herd of breeding elephants. Three of the elephants charged at the hunters and Botha is reported to have fired a shot. However, an elephant which approached from the side caught Botha by surprise and lifted him, up using her trunk. Unfortunately, the elephant collapsed on top of Botha and crushed him to death after it was shot by one of his clients.
