Over 200 former Zupco employees to stage 3 day sit-in in protest over unpaid severance packages

Police in Bulawayo have cleared a planned demonstration by over 200 former Zimbabwe United Passengers Company (Zupco) workers who intend to conduct a sit-in at the parastatal’s Khami depot in Bulawayo this week in protest over unpaid severance packages.

In an application letter to police, dated May 10, the former workers’ chairperson Lucas Munyika accused Zupco of defrauding pensioners by deducting and not remitting some of their pension dues to Fidelity Life Pensions Fund for the period 2006 to 2010. Munyika says that this has caused Fidelity Life to refuse paying them their pensions until Zupco has paid over $3,5 million it owes the Pension Fund as per end of 2015.  NewsDay could not reach Zupco management for a comment yesterday.
