Govt launches national ID registration programme for Gukurahundi victims

Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko has launched the government’s registration programme for national identity documents for people who have been disadvantaged by Gukurahundi Massacres. Victims had been unable to get birth certificates and national identification cards after losing their parents or homes in the political violence which occured just after Independence in Matabeleland and Midlands. This affected later generations, who were also unable to be registered.

Speaking at Tshino Primary School in Tsholotsho, Vice President Mphoko who is also the Minister of National Healing and Reconciliation said:

When all this happened here in Tsholotsho, Lupane, Matabeleland South and Midlands, a lot of people were affected and left without national documents. They could not obtain death certificates for their parents. Now they can’t claim their parents benefits because it is not known whose children they are since they do not have any documents to prove their identity

Registrar General Tobaiwa Mudede added that the programme is being done to assist families who lost their documents in the floods caused by Cyclone Dineo. Said Mudede:

A lot of people lost birth certificates, national identity documents, death certificates for their relatives and even marriage certificates during the floods here in February. So we sent a team to come and assess the situation here and that is why we are here to assist everyone who lost their documents. We have brought our machines and your documents will be processed instantly
