MDC-T secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora revealed to NewsDay that his party is deliberately keeping information of biometric voter registration (BVR) kits’ flaws from the public and is engaging the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) quietly so as not to discourage the electorate from voting next year.
Said Mwonzora:
We have been seized with this issue and have engaged Zec, we wrote them a letter on the issues, which were eventually raised in NewsDay. The party is engaging Zec quietly on electoral reforms because, if we do it in public, we might discourage people from participating in the election.
An unnamed source from MDC-T told NewsDay that the party is well aware of BVR kits challenges. Party spokesperson Obert Gutu said the leaked document by Laxton Group exposing ZEC’s shortcomings had vindicated Tsvangirai who was criticised for endorsing the decision to award the group the tender to supply BVR kits.
