Govt raises $6 million from airtime tax

Government has given the Ministry of Health and Child Care $6 million it raised from a five percent excise duty on airtime that was introduced in 2014 to raise health levy.

Speaking during a family planning symposium held in Harare last Friday as the country celebrated the World Population Day, Principal Director Preventive Services in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Dr Gibson Mhlanga confirmed that his ministry had received the money from Treasury. Said Dr Mhlanga:

To date, I think we have been allocated about $6 million and as ministry we are in discussion in terms of how that money that has been raised is going to be utilised and certainly I hope that my colleagues within the ministry will see it fit for us to allocate some of that money towards family planning services.
