Govt probes boarding school after 6 girls fall pregnant

Bulawayo’s Provincial Education Director Mrs Olicah Kaira confirmed to The Chronicle that the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is investigating a case where 6 girls are suspected of being pregnant at Founders High School in Bulawayo.

Kaira also said that someone wrote a letter reporting the incident to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education. Said Kaira:

All I can say is that we received the allegation through an anonymous letter. And we have already constituted an investigating team to get to the school to unravel the allegations, come up with findings and recommendations, then I will know the next course of action to take.

A source who spoke on condition of anonymity said that the school authorities had not talked to the girls who are suspected of being pregnant as they want to engage their parents first. The authorities also fear that if they speak to the students first they might run away. The source also said that the pupils are said to be behaving in a way that has led some female teachers to assume that it could be pregnancy related illness.
