Clashes between the Zimbabwe Republic Police and commuter omnibus operators in Kwekwe yesterday turned ugly, forcing some of the commuter omnibus drivers and touts to seek refuge at the Zanu PF offices. Commuters were left stranded after kombi crews demonstrated against the high number of road blocks saying that they were being fleeced by the police. An operator who spoke to New Zimbabwe said:
At each check point you are supposed to part with a minimum of $5 to $10 depending on the offence. The situation is not practical considering that we are declaring less than $60 to our employers.
Another driver who spoke to the Chronicle said:
Today we found three roadblocks mounted by police officers between Kwekwe and Redcliff. The cops at each roadblock were demanding $10. We make about $35 on good days and paying would mean killing our business
Officer Commanding Police Kwekwe District, Chief Superintendent David Tiese said:
It’s really saddening that it has come to this. I am disturbed with the way you (commuter operators) have tried to solve this issue. Public disorder is a serious crime. If there is any problem you should approach us for a discussion
