At least 50 Zimbabweans have applied to fill the vacancy of hangman which has been open more than 10 years. The last prisoner on death row was executed in 2005. Applicants include both men and women. Permanent secretary in the ministry of justice Virginia Mabhiza was unable to say when an appointment can be expected. Said Mabhiza,
The response has been overwhelming and the applications have been from both men and women interested in taking up the position of hangman. We have received over 50 applications in the past few months.
People are very interested
According to the Constitution, only males aged between 18 and 69 years and have been convicted of murder in aggravated circumstances can receive capital punishment.
