ZRP Traffic Now Using CCTV Instead Of Roadblocks To Go After Errant Drivers

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is now reported to be using closed circuit television (CCTV) installed at traffic lights and other locations to go after errant motorists. The move which was implemented by acting Commissioner-General of the ZRP, Godwin Matanga has resulted in the arrest of at least 37 motorists for reckless driving and driving without due care and attention. The accused were taken to court where they were convicted and sentenced to between 30 days to 180 days in prison. Fines ranged from $100 – $300. In a statement, deputy police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said

These convictions follow the recent arrest of 37 rogue drivers in Harare for reckless driving and driving without due care and attention after they were caught on camera during the ongoing Operation Adhere to Traffic Rules and Regulations.

Under former police commissioner-general Augustine Chihuri the police force had become one of the most loathed organisations in the country and had a reputation of extorting motorists at numerous roadblocks mounted across the country.
