Former president Robert Mugabe is reported to have turned down the Zanu-PF Youth league’s offer to hold a public birthday party for him. Mugabe’s birthday was in the past celebrated extravagantly at a cost of millions of dollars. Last year the party was estimated to have cost at least $2 million.
Mugabe turned down the offer as he is said to be bitter about the way he was removed from power in November last year after a military intervention. As a result, he preferred to celebrate with his close family members. A member of the family who spoke to NewsDay said:
He wants to be with his family and those who love him genuinely and not those who want to abuse his name for political gains.
The family would want to hold the birthday party for our old man, as a private event. But critically, what business does the party have for a man they removed in the manner they did?
