Grace Will Not Be Arrested When She Goes To SA, She Still Has Diplomatic Immunity For Assaulting Model Says Lawyer
Willie Spies, the lawyer for Gabriella Engels, has said that former first lady Grace Mugabe will not be arrested if she enters South Africa despite the fall of former president Robert Mugabe. Spies conceded that Grace still has diplomatic immunity for assaulting Engels with an electrical cable last year at a South African hotel.
Speaking to the daily publication, NewsDay, Spies said:
The fact remains that the prosecuting authority in South Africa does nothing [in bringing Grace to justice] while the immunity granted to the former First Lady, still stands.
FeedbackHowever, Spies added that a South African court will hear a motion to set aside Grace’s immunity between 10 and 11 May.
Engels’s mother Debbie added:
We are aware that she is no longer a person of power, that her husband was ousted from office and that the government of Zimbabwe said she does not enjoy any immunity anymore.
In light of the latest developments, our lawyers are working on that case to secure justice for my child.
