Current British Ambassador To Zimbabwe, Catriona Laing has been appointed as the new British High Commissioner to Nigeria. Her new appointment will be from 1 November 2018. Laing will succeed Paul Arkwright in her new posting. Commenting on her new post on microblogging site Twitter, Laing said,
It is now official! This is where I am going next. Excited but will be very sad to leave Zimbabwe. Not leaving yet of course. Lots to do!
Laing has come under fire from opposition parties and civil society organisations who have accused her and the British of backing President Emmerson Mnangagwa to win the July 30 harmonised elections. As usual, there were mixed reactions to Laing’s appointment with many celebrating and sending their commiserations to the Nigerians while others were sad to see her go. MDC-T deputy treasurer Charlton Hwende tweeted
Thank you UK Government
On the other hand, Mazowe South MP (Zanu-PF) Fortune Chasi said,
You will be sadly missed. But you are still with us for a while. Wish you the best.
