We Will Not Lift Sanctions Until Mnangagwa Administration Demonstrates That It Is "Changing Its Ways" - United States
United States Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs Manisha Singh on Thursday told a House of Representatives hearing that the United States will maintain its economic sanctions until President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government demonstrates that it has reformed. Singh said that there 141 Zimbabwean companies and individuals on the sanctions list. President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his predecessor, former President Robert Mugabe are included on the list.
Said Singh
Our pressure on Zimbabwe remains in place. We are trying to use this pressure to leverage political and economic reforms, human rights observations…We want to see fundamental changes in Zimbabwe and only then will we resume normal relations with them…We are always open to conversations. We are open to a demonstration from the government that it is changing its ways, that it is observing human rights.
FeedbackThis comes at a time Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Sibusiso Moyo has been speaking optimistically about improved relations with the US.
