Zimbabweans In New Zealand Fear For The Safety Of Their Loved Ones Back Home

Zimbabweans living in New Zealand fear for the safety of their kith and kin back home as security forces continue a brutal crackdown on protestors.

Riots started on Monday after President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced a dramatic fuel price hike last Saturday.

The BBC reports that 12 people have been killed during the protests and hundreds more were beaten and injured. The United Nations has urged the government to stop using excessive against unarmed protestors. UN human rights spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani said:

We don’t have verification of the exact number of people who were killed or injured, but there are Doctors’ Associations that are putting numbers out there that more than 60 people were treated in hospitals for gunshot wounds.

The was euphoria when former President Robert Mugabe was ousted in 2017 in a military coup but the hope has turned to despair as the new regime is considered worse than the old one.
