36 Children Arrested During ShutDownZim - Police Spokesperson Reveals
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed on Tuesday that it arrested 36 children in Harare and Chitungwiza during the recent nationwide protests which the government blames on the opposition MDC and civil society organisations.
This was revealed by national police spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba while addressing the media on Tuesday. Said Charamba:
Before we came to this briefing, we inquired with all our police stations across the country. Some children were arrested during the recent civil arrest and so far we are aware that 14 were arrested in Braeside (Harare) and 22 in Chitungwiza.
FeedbackAll the children arrested were released into the custody of their parents and guardians.
Probation officers are also involved and all interviews will be conducted in the presence of their lawyers or guardians.
Charamba said that there is no law that says children should not be arrested when they commit crimes otherwise it will incalculate a culture of criminality. Charamba further revealed that some of the juveniles were arrested for pelting law enforcement agents with stones and for looting.
