Mnangagwa's Meeting Will Not Solve Crisis Like Ian Smith/Abel Muzorewa's Internal Settlement- Welshman Ncube
Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) vice president Welshman Ncube compared talks initiated by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to resolve Zimbabwe’s political and economic crisis to Ian Smith’s Internal Settlement.
The Internal Settlement was an agreement which was signed on 3 March 1978 between Prime Minister of Rhodesia Ian Smith and the moderate African nationalist leaders comprising Bishop Abel Muzorewa, Ndabaningi Sithole and Senator Chief Jeremiah Chirau. The Internal Settlement collapsed after ZANU and ZAPU continued waging war, and the United Nations Security Council declared any settlement drafted under the “illegal racist minority regime” to be “illegal and unacceptable.” Said Ncube:
Why do humans have great difficulty in embracing the lessons of history? Did the Smith/ Muzorewa dialogue resolve the Rhodesian question?
