Social activists Tajamuka/Sesijikile have urged the government to declare a blanket amnesty on scores of its members who fled the country during and after the January riots this year.
The activists are petrified of returning home as the government has indicated that they will be arrested on return.
Tajamuka/Sesijikile organising secretary Tineyi Munetsi had this to say:
We are communicating with everyone outside the country, they are all well but we are urging them to come back home because there is no role they are playing from outside.
We are making an appeal to the government to stop all those harassments and stop detaining people.
We are not hundred per cent safe in Zimbabwe, we have activists such as (Pastor Evan) Mawarire who are now being asked to report daily to the police and a lot more who were accused of violence during the (January) shutdown.
A brutal crackdown on protestors left a reported 17 people dead mainly from gunshot wounds while hundreds more were seriously injured while over 1 000 people were arrested including juveniles.
Some of those who were arrested have since been charged with treason.
The protests followed the government’s decision to hike the price of fuel by over 150 per cent, making Zimbabwe’s fuel the most expensive on the planet.
