ZIMRA Condemned For Victimising Trade Unionists
Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) has been criticised for allegedly victimising workers’ committee representatives. The attack emanates from the Zimbabwe Revenue and Allied Workers Trade Union (Zimratu) which has since called for government intervention.
The authority is alleged to have suspended a workers’ representative John Chirenda without benefits. Resultantly, workers from across the country resigned from employee committees.
Zimratu general-secretary Lovemore Ngwarati said:
Zimratu has learnt with shock of the massive resignations of workers’ committee members across Zimra and condemns the up scaling of victimisation of workers which culminated in the suspension of Chirenda without benefits,
…that has triggered the resignation of all workers’ committee members in all regions for fear of reprisals by management.
Chirenda is argued to have been suspended for raising the issue of rigid salaries. He is believed to have claimed that they are not in sync with the cost of living.
