The shortage of beef in general and superior beef, in particular, has been blamed on farmers’ reluctance to pay taxes.
Failure to pay taxes makes it difficult for cattle buyers to clear livestock on the market.
Some communal farmers reportedly hold on to their cattle for as long as possible and only sell when old and can no longer produce quality beef. The manager at Molus Meats, Artwell Mwagura had this to say:
Shortages are always there despite the outbreak of diseases that we have been experiencing lately. Some farmers do not pay their annual taxes on livestock and it is a challenge to off-takers to get livestock cleared into the market.
Quality is also a problem as farmers normally want to sell old and used up cattle which have poor quality beef. It would then become a challenge to get good quality like superior beef.
