United States Excited By Mthuli's Economic Reforms
The United States is impressed by the economic policies being implemented by Zimbabwe’s Finance and Economic Development Minister Mthuli Ncube.
The Americans have, however, called for political reforms and the bringing to justice of security forces responsible for the brutal crackdown on protestors in January.
Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com earlier this week, Senior Economic Officer at the US embassy in Harare Christopher Hunnicutt said:
There has been a lot of progress in the fiscal area which is aimed at stabilising the situation through reforms meant to improve the ease of doing business.
There is some consistency in economic policies. However, there is a need to find ways to stabilise the currency situation but in some instances, this can be taken as work in progress.
… But there is need to appreciate that political issues are also a part of economic issues because they scare away investors, hence the need to have respect for human rights.
The violence in January was a huge setback and we are calling for accountability of those events.
Other senior American official have also taken the same stance, that for sanctions to be removed, the Zimbabwean government has to institute political and media reforms.
