The Minister of Public Service and Social Welfare, Sekai Nzenza revealed that the government is set to raise the payouts given to pensioners as the current $80.00 per month has become inadequate.
Nzenza said this in the National Assembly in response to a question raised by Mkoba MP, Amos Chibaya (MDC Alliance). said Nzenza:
… I promised that there was going to be a review of pensions and I will discuss with my colleague the Minister of Finance looking at ways of increasing the pensions for the pensioners.
At the moment, I do agree that prices are on the increase and I know it is tough for the pensioners. What I can inform you is that we are still reviewing and we are holding talks with the minister of Finance on the issue of pensioners.
Nzenza whoever, could not disclose when the review will be effected. She said she will have to consult the relevant ministries and announce the new position in due course.
