Two More Human Rights Defenders Released On $1 000 Bail Each
Two activists who were arrested last month and charged with subversion were released on bail on Monday by the High Court.
The duo, Rita Nyamupinga and Stabile Dhewa, were arrested on arrival at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport on their return from the Maldives where they had gone to attend a workshop.
High Court judge, Justice Amy Tsanga ordered their release on Monday on $1 000 bail each.
In an interview with AFP, Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights spokesman Kumbirai Mafunda said:
We welcome the court’s decision in releasing the human rights campaigners. They did not deserve to have been in prison in the first place.
Mafunda, however, revealed that the two were released on stringent bail conditions as they are required to report to the police every day among other conditions.
Their release follows that of the other five activists who were released on bail on Friday.
The arrest of the 7 activists came soon after State-controlled publication, The Herald published an article which claimed that they were in the Maldives for training on subversive activities.
