Govt Tells Health Practitioners To End Discrimination Against Albinos
The government has called for an end to discrimination against people living with Albinism.
Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Energy Mutodi said that Albinism should be treated like any other physical condition.
Speaking at the Albinism Health Fair facilitated by the Global Aid Missions in Harare on Saturday, Mutodi said:
Access to health care services is often accompanied by discrimination and stigmatisation hence leading to the hindrance of full service.
…Health professionals should end discrimination against people living with albinism. They should treat the condition just like any other condition like diabetes, cancer and many other conditions.
Mutodi claimed that the government is committed to providing assistance to people living with Albinism through the Ministry of Health. He said:
However, the government is also committed to extending help to people living with albinism. So the Ministry of Health is going to be capacitated to develop state of the art hospitals for people living with albinism.
Global Aid Missions managing director and cleric Fungai Chasi said that the major drawback faced by people living with Albinism is that a lot of people’s understanding of the condition is based on myths and superstitions.
Chasi revealed that Albinism is a genetic condition which comes as a result of the lack of melanin in the body which many people do not understand.
