A kombi driver, Beni Beavan (28), was jailed for an effective two years and banned from driving for life after he was convicted of reckless driving and failure to acquire a re-test.
Beaven reportedly drove his Toyota Hiace on the wrong side of the road thus endangering the lives of his passengers.
Prosecutor Isheunesu Mhiti prayed the magistrate for a custodial sentence as Beavan had committed a serious offence. Mhiti argued that a noncustodial sentence will belittle the crime. He said:
Such offences are on the rise and the court has to send a clear message to would-be offenders. A custodial sentence will bring about sanity on our roads.
