Embassies Will Soon Issue Out National Identity Documents - Foreign Affairs Minister
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Sibusiso B. Moyo has said that Zimbabwean embassies will start issuing national identity documents in respective countries.
At the moment, diasporans have to travel all the way back to Zimbabwe for a fresh application of the documents.
The retired army officer was giving oral evidence before the parliamentary portfolio committee on Foreign Affairs chaired by Makonde National Assembly MP Kindness Paradza in Harare on Monday.
At this year’s annual Zim Expo held in Chicago, the United States of America, Staff members from the Zimbabwe Embassy assisted Zimbabweans in the diaspora to get birth certificates, passports and other documents.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe is currently facing huge challenges in printing passports. Reports suggest that the Registrar General’s office is currently issuing a total of about 250 passports daily out of the required minimum of 3000. The office is also reported to have a backlog that goes back to 2018. Resultantly, officials in the office of the Registrar General are reportedly asking huge kickbacks from passport seekers.
Authorities recently announced that within two to three weeks, issuance of not less than 3000 passports a day on average will resume.
It is therefore not clear how the embassies will be able to issue the same documents when the country, which funds their operations, is found wanting in the same areas.
