Zimbabweans Remember Victims Of August 1 Shootings
On August 1 2018, state police and soldiers cracked down on MDC protesters who were demonstrating against alleged election manipulation by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission in favour of the ruling ZANU PF and President Emmerson Mnangagwa. The army fired live ammunition on protesters who were allegedly becoming uncontainable. About seven people died in the violence whilst scores of civilians sustained gun wounds. The violence was condemned widely and wildly by local political parties, civil society organisations, individuals, members of the diplomatic call and the international community. Soldiers denied ever shooting at the civilians thereby forcing the president to later institute a Kgalema Motlanthe led Commission to investigate the incident. The commission made recommendations aimed at bringing to justice all implicated soldiers and police. The recommendations also aimed at peace and nation-building.
