"Handina Mweya Unotongwa" Singer Sentenced To 2 Years In Prison For Theft
Tinotenda Katsande, a Harare based gospel musician of the “Handina Mweya Unotongwa Nemadzinza” fame has been convicted of stealing the very song from former churchmate, Tsitsi Kavhukatema.
The misunderstanding between Katsande and Kavhukatema started when Katsande’s live performance of the song made rounds on social media last year.
At that time, Katsande was yet to record the song although he had already hinted on recording it. See video below.
Harare provincial magistrate, Learnmore Mapiye, on Tuesday fined Katsande RTGS$400 and also banned airplay for the song after finding the accused’s defence not convincing. Mapiye also said that Katsande would be jailed for two years in the event that he fails to pay the fine.
Katsande had said that he had grown up hearing the song sung in church hence his decision to give it a different flavour.
Prosecutor, Idah Maromo, proved to the court that Kavhukatema composed and released the song in 2008 and 2012 respectively way before Katsande recorded it.
