The national football women’s team, the Mighty Warriors’ suffering continues unabated after the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) handed each one of them a paltry $15 for transport allowance after returning home on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mighty Warriors recently participated in the 2019 Cosafa Women’s Championship in Port Elizabeth, South Africa where they lost in the semi-final to the host team, Banyana Banyana.
They, however, ended their participation at the tournament on a high note after beating Botswana 3-0 in the play-off match on Saturday, getting bronze medals in the process.
ZIFA communications manager, Xolisani Gwesela told the Daily News that the players were given their transport allowances. He said:
We don’t discuss the money that we give to players. It’s part of our contractual obligation.
What I can confirm is that players were given transport allowance based on Zifa rates and where one stays.
The Mighty Warriors and junior teams had to travel by road from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg, a distance of 1,065.3 km.
