OpenQualified Teachers To Know At Least 4 Languages
The government has resolved to make it mandatory for newly qualified teachers to know at least four of the 16 Zimbabwe’s official languages.
This was revealed by Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Minister, Amon Murwira, during a graduation ceremony at Belvedere Technical Teachers’ College (BTTC) recently. He said:
A teacher to graduate should now have at least four of the 16 official languages.
Zimbabwe’s 16 official languages are Chewa, Chibarwe, English, Kalanga, Koisan, Nambya, Ndau, Ndebele, Shangani, Shona, sign language, Sotho, Tonga, Tswana, Venda and Xhosa.
BTTC currently has an enrolment of 2 950 (1 118 males and 1 832 females) as compared to 2 296 (917 males and 1 379 females in 2018, recording a 28 per cent increase.
Since the first graduation in 1985, a total of 15 946 (7 751 males and 8 195 females) skilled persons have been graduated from the college.
