Controversial Zimbabwean businessman, Wicknell Chivayo last week met Malawian President Peter Mutharika in the central African country.
Chivayo’s wealth is linked to corruption and he is a media attention seeker, according to Nyasa Times. The report claims:
Chivayo’s wealth is linked to corruption in Zimbabwe and has been a social media attention seeker known for posting images of himself sitting behind a table loaded with bricks of US dollar banknotes in an ostentatious display of riches.
Chivayo is the Managing Director of Intratrek Ltd and is involved in a legal wrangle with the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC), a subsidiary of Zimbabwe’s power utility, ZESA Holdings.
Sir Wicknell, as he calls himself, was in Malawi where his technical partners Chint Electric of China have just completed four power projects. Writing on social media, he said:
I spent the last five days in Malawi on a business trip and more importantly had to pass by and congratulate His Excellency the President of the Republic of Malawi Peter Mutharika on his victory in the recent elections.
He is indeed a wonderful father figure to us all Africans. As a long-time supporter of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), I commend his tireless efforts to grow the economy and redevelop Malawi to improve the lives of the ordinary citizens. I’m proud to be part of his vision.
Some Malawians who commented on the ‘Sir Wicknell’ story expressed outrage over Chivayo’s visit to Malawi. One comment reads:
Looks like these two bwanas deserve each other. Takes a thief to know a thief. Birds of a feather flock together. The ‘economic progress’ referred to is their own personal economic progress.
Another commentator said:
Thieves at their best lol! Praising each other. Zimbabwe is suffering because of this idiot with his old Mugabe, praises from such kind of people go to stupid educated fools.
Meanwhile, one Mjojo said President Mutharika’s advisors should do background checks of people like Chivayo before they meet the President. He wrote:
For sure APM advisors would have done him the justice to do background checks of this guy before meeting him.
In the current political turmoil, an intelligent president would have done well to choose who he meets unless he is like this Zimbabwe Mafia.
