Patrick Zhuwao, the nephew to the late President Robert Mugabe, says the late president died in exile. Zhuwao was speaking to the SABC in an interview.
Said Zhuwao:
I think the family has taken it pretty hard. We were expecting this but all the same we are saddened. And I think what saddens us the most is that President Mugabe died in exile.
President Mugabe had always said that he was born in Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe is where he would die, and Zimbabwe is where he would be buried. And it’s rather unfortunate that he was not able to die in Zimbabwe.
And this is within the context of the statements that he made during the November 2017 coup when he said he was not leaving Zimbabwe, he would rather die in Zimbabwe.
And the events that then followed; the abuse that he had to contend with from former colleagues was just too much, he ended up having to go out of the country, so that he would not be able to stomach the betrayal that he was unfortunately subjected to.
The statement echos similar assertion by former minister in Mugabe’s government, Savior Kasukuwere.
