Anti-riot police on Monday moved to quash a planned demonstration by students at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) campus.
The students were protesting against lecturers’ decision to embark on a go-slow two weeks ago, citing incapacitation.
Students leader Dennis Mwashita told NewsDay that some student representatives were picked up by police for questioning. He said:
Lecturers have been complaining about not getting their pay, so they have decided to shun evening classes.
Conventional students are learning, but it’s just a formality. The lecturers are on a go-slow.
We mobilised students so that they can listen to our grievances. We were actually surprised by how the information about our demo leaked.
We were surprised to see police on the campus on Monday as soon as we started the demo.
The students vowed to continue with the protests until lectures resume.
