Senior Doctors Declare Incapacitation, Cite Poor Remuneration
Senior doctors at Zimbabwe’s public health institutions have declared incapacitation, arguing that their remuneration is way below regional counterparts.
In a statement on Monday, the Senior Hospital Doctors Association (SHDA) declared that its members have a right to fair and safe labour practices and standards and to be paid a fair and reasonable wage. The statement reads in part:
South African senior hospital doctors are paid an average of ZAR80 000 — ZAR 120 000 per month. In our situation, senior medical doctors are paid a basic salary of less than RTGS$500.00 while Consultants receive a basic salary of RTGS$ 1010, 00.
FeedbackSHDA stated that current remuneration does not take into account the rising cost of living, hence doctors can no longer afford to get to work.
The declaration of incapacitation by senior doctors follows a similar move by their juniors, the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association on 3 September 2019.
