The government has been urged to stop the free distribution of c_ndoms and use the resources to provide free sanitary pads for women.
The call was made by Thandikile Mkwananzi, a gender activist who was addressing delegates to the Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ) conference. She said:
Imagine you have three girls in your family, you add yourself then look at the price of sanitary pads. It becomes a burden and expensive. Then you look around and realise condoms are distributed for free even when sex is a pleasure and by choice.
Meanwhile, the price of sanitary pads has remained high and unaffordable for most women with some reports claiming that young girls as young as 9 years old have resorted to the use of contraceptive bills.
