ZANU PF Secretary for Administration, Obert Mpofu has said that the ruling party was more superior than the government which he described as the party’s “agent”.
During an interview with Daily News reporter, Fungai Kwaramba, Mpofu also said that the party has mooted measures to control address the unpleasant economic crisis. He added that the measures will be implemented through the party’s “implementing agents, which is the government”.
This prompted the reporter to ask if the party was more superior than the government. Below are excerpts from the interview.
Q: Are you saying the party is now superior to the government and can act when things go wrong?
Mpofu: Government will never be superior to the party, the party is superior. Only that before, party functionaries were in government, you would be in the politburo and also in Cabinet. But what the new dispensation has done is to separate our functions.
The senior members of the party are running the party and directing operations of government through our president. We have the powers in terms of operations but because people are not used to this arrangement, people think ministers act in isolation, no. They are running the government on behalf of the party and they are assigned to government by the party.
