The drought being experienced in the country has lead to the death of 55 elephants in the last 2 months at Hwange National Park the Chronicle reports.
This was revealed by ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo who was speaking after a Hwange villager was attacked and killed by elephants last week.
Said Mr Farawo:
Since two months ago 55 elephants, excluding other species, have died in Hwange National Park alone due to starvation as there is no water and food. Animals are travelling long distances looking for water and are dying within 50 metres of water sources. Initially we suspected that it was anthrax or poisoning but investigations showed that they are dying because of drought
It is believed the drought is now causing wild animals to invade human territories in search of food and water. The drought being experienced due to erratic rains during the 2018/2019 rain season has left the government importing maize to feed the nation.
