4000 Zimbabwean Border Jumpers Intercepted At Botswana Border
Botswana police have arrested 4000 Zimbabweans who were trying to smuggle themselves into that country.
The development was announced by Botswana senior police officer, assistant superintendent Mothokomedi Ponyane whilst addressing delegates during a Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) mass crime awareness campaign at Dingumuzi Stadium in Plumtree on Tuesday. Ponyame said:
The most problematic issue in Botswana is illegal border crossing. Between January and September this year, statistics show that we arrested 4387 Zimbabwean nationals crossing into Botswana through border jumping. Out of this total number, 2479 are males and the remaining comprised of both women and children.
FeedbackMost Zimbabweans have been jumping the borders to neighbouring countries as the country’s economy has continued on a downward spiral.
The soaring inflation, power cuts, shortage of medicines, high unemployment rates, the collapse of the health sector and severe starvation have been the major attributes of the migration although some claim that they are political victims.
