ED Warned Of Likely Open Rebellion
Analysts have warned president Emmerson Mnangagwa of a likely open rebellion if he fails to reign in his party members.
The warning comes when there are reports suggesting that some remnants of Generation 40 (G40) faction in the party are plotting to dislodge the president from power.
Speaking to the Daily News, University of Zimbabwe political science lecturer, Eldred Masunungure said that Mnangagwa risked being removed from power the Mugabe style by failing to outmanoeuvre factionalism in the party. Masunungure said:
Factionalism is alive and well in Zanu PF. Mnangagwa is the political godfather of one faction and there are some godfathers and godmothers of other factions in the ruling party. This is thus a continuing game of factionalism.
He is telling his opponents that ‘I am strategically located than you’ and thus he is threatening them with the power of incumbency, but we saw with Mugabe that he could not really command the power of the State and Mnangagwa knows that.
Ibbo Mandaza who is a staunch critic of Mnangagwa said that low turn out at the anti-sanctions march exposed factionalism in ZANU PF as the MPs could have mobilised people enough to fill the stadium.
