Seven million Zimbabweans residing in both rural and urban areas have reportedly registered for food aid.
The Herald reports that a third of the vulnerable population, which is 2.2 million people, resides in the urban areas.
Public Labour and Social Welfare Deputy Minister, Lovemore Matuke on Wednesday said that the government was, together with its partners had started assisting the vulnerable people. Matuke said:
We have started extending food aid and cash assistance to some of them, but we are yet to cover all the affected people.
Zimbabwe is facing severe starvation due to El Nino induced drought, Tropical Cyclone Idai which destroyed crops which were weeks away from harvest and the deteriorating economic situation.
This is happening when the Public Accounts Committee is alleging that more than US$3 billion meant for Command Agriculture was abused by the scheme runners, Sakunda Holdings which is owned by Kuda Tagwirei.
